Green Gains Momentum
THERE’S A DISTINCTIVE SHIFT RIPPLING THROUGH THE
commercial real estate business. Property professionals seem to
be talking less about their deals—which given the slowdown in
the market might not be all that surprising—and more about
their efforts to promote planet-friendly practices. And it isn’t just
about building green or investing in assets with an eye toward
remaking them into models of efficiency. It’s about establishing
internal programs to make a company’s own workspace greener and encouraging employees to be more eco-conscious.
FORUM associate editor Danielle Douglas spoke with a handful of
firms who are on the front lines of the green movement (“Green
Principles Take Root,” page 48). While many of these companies have already instituted a number of environmentally sound
measures, such as energy conservation and recycling programs
and going carbon neutral, the executives are quick to point out
that this is only the beginning; they are currently working on
expanding and refining these green strategies as well as
devising ways to assess their effectiveness.
When professionals do talk about green, one of the first topics to come up is the cost factor. Are such measures cost-effective? What kind of an impact do they have on a company’s bottom line? These questions, and others, are likely to be
addressed during “Making the Business Case for Green,” a
special webinar presented on GlobeSt.com that will air live on
March 24 at 12: 30 EST. Moderated by John Salustri, executive
editor of Real Estate Media’s online division, panelists include
Larry Heard, president and CEO of Transwestern; Victoria Kahn,
managing director of ING Clarion; Jim Lutz, SVP of development at Liberty Property Trust; Mark Rauenhorst, president,
CEO and chairman of Opus Corp.; and Brenna Walraven, president of BOMA International and an executive managing director
at USAA. The webinar, the first of many for Real Estate Media,
will be available for replay on GlobeSt.com.
