Busy Worker Bees
I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I HAVE NO
idea where the summer went. It’s hard to believe
that we’re already in the fourth quarter. With market
fundamentals continuously improving quarter to
quarter, it will be interesting to see how the rest of
this year pans out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an uptick in deal velocity
across the board by the time the holidays come around.
That means most of you reading this will certainly be busy in the coming weeks. For many, actually, the balance of the year won’t be all too
different from what you’ve already been doing. Just ask the folks at the
Reznick Group, who are the subjects of this month’s cover story. The
five principals I spoke with at the consulting firm all discussed how busy
they have been this past year, providing their clients with not only the
basics, but each also serving as advisor/translator/human GPS in helping
real estate companies navigate through the ever-changing legislative and
regulatory landscape for tax and accounting rules. Read more about the
day-to-day challenges they and their clients face on page 46.
Brokers in the New York area have also had their hands full, if the
results of our Top Regional Brokerage Firm survey are any indication. As
an addendum to our usual FORUM Local coverage, we collected information from most leasing and investment sales brokerage houses active in
the Empire State to come up with this year’s ranking of the top dealmak-ers. Turn to page 30 to see who made it to the top five in each category.
(And keep an eye out for our New Jersey and Southern California rankings, to appear in the November and December issues, respectively.)
This month, we’re also featuring some of the best and brightest up-and-comers in our 40 Under 40 list. Beginning on page 50, you can
see 40 (well, 41—two came as a team) professionals that have already
racked up impressive accomplishments in their careers, all by the time,
or before, they’ve hit middle age. And chances are, this won’t be the
last you’ll hear of them.
On a somber note, we were saddened to hear about the death of
Cassidy Turley president David T. Houston Jr. earlier this month. A pioneer
in the New Jersey real estate community, and a well-known figure nationally, Houston previously led Teaneck, NJ-based Colliers Houston & Co.
before the firm merged into Cassidy Turley. In his nearly 40-year career, he
handled the sale and leasing of some of the largest office and industrial
deals in New Jersey. He also served as a trustee of NAIOP for 20 years
and was a past president of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors
and a district vice president and president of the SIOR New Jersey chapter.
If you’d like to honor his memory, make a donation to the
Scholarship Fund at SIOR, 1201 New York Ave. NW, Suite 350,
